Help us stay in the competition!

The competition is really tough! If you like Driftmoon, please vote and ask your friends to vote for us at http://www.2beegames.com/.

UPDATE: This is the most critical moment this week, if you haven’t voted yet, please vote!

Edit: New preview version is here. If you haven’t tried the game yet, that’s a good place to start.

Wow, how on earth did things change so much in the last two hours since I checked…

I will try to get my friends at Uni to play the game and vote for you, pretty sure most of them will like it or at least understand the level of commitment and hard work that has gone into this.

Coming up next is long rant about myself and some question for you if you care to answer :D

I found your site a couple months back and it has really made me motivated to start learning how to make games (maybe not as complicated as yours at first though :D ). I have a IT related Degree already (from Kemi-Tornio AMK), but didnt learn too much about programming in that one so this autumn I went back to school to learn Software Engineering (at Edinburgh Napier Uni).
Next semester I will have a module in Games Engineering where I will learn some of the basics of programming games, but what do you recommend learning? (or what languages do you use yourself?)

I know a decent amount of C# and Java (mostly from Uni and some self taught), I know they aint used much in games programming, but I’m sure could start making my own simple games with them for now. I have also just started teaching myself, Lua (for scripting) and OpenGL, but dont know if they are good for beginners etc.

So if there is any advice you could give to your fellow countryman about where to start it would be much appreciated :D

Thanks! Half of my relatives live in Kemi, we’re practically related! :)

If you want to make games as a hobby, don’t get too complicated at first because you’ll lose motivation if you don’t release a game at least every half a year. Any language will do, though professionals always use C/C++. The best way to get an idea of game development would be to start your own perhaps smaller projects and go up from that.

If you have a selection of courses to take, I’d recommend graphics programming as that’s easily the most rewarding.

And my recommendation still stands: don’t make your own engine if you just want to make games. Use the free Unreal or Unity engines. If you want to learn how to make an engine and don’t want to make a game, then by all means program a game engine. Doing both at one time usually means years instead of months, and almost always means canceling the project.

Thanks for the advice, I will see what kind of graphics related options I have available at my Uni.

I do want to be able to write my own engine at some point, but not any time soon. Just need to start with something small first and build it from that (like you said), but for now I need to get all my coursework and exams out of the way before I can invest any time on this.

Hopefully in a year or so I am able to produce something that I might even show to people :D

Don’t know about the related thing though, I’m not from Kemi myself, although I do know a bunch of people from there :P

Uh, it seems like I can not play the new version, it just will not run.
I keep trying; it does not even start, it just kicks me to desktop.
Any idea of what might be causing this? A missing driver, anything?

  6. DRL DRL says:

Hey everyone! Thank you for your help. I updated DirectX, and the game runs as intended now :) . However, I found a small bug, and since “1 image is worth more than 1000 words”, I will leave it here: http://cid-1599a92ea4c99523.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/P%C3%BAblico/Driftmoon/water%5E_walking%5E_wolf.jpg
A skillful wolf, is not it?

    • DRL DRL says:

I am sorry if I sounded mean or anything, it is just that I find it funny. When do you have the chance to see a wolf walking on the water?

    • Ville Ville says:

:D I saw that myself earlier. I have no idea what’s causing it, since the water line should be unpassable, and I don’t think I’ve placed any wolves to the water.

  7. Anne Anne says:

We officially made it to the final round, thank you everyone!

The other contestant advertised a lot especially towards the end of the week (in-game adds, very popular sites, etc.), and we didn’t have a lot of time for that yet.

Ville will put up a new version of Driftmoon in 2beegames tonight, which fixes an unfortunate bug in our previous 2beegame-update (the new version is already available above). We’ll also try to make the name Driftmoon more familiar to people, and get the word out on at least some of the indie forums out there. We want more of the voters to actually try Driftmoon, and find out what a great game it is! :)

If most of the voters really play the finalist games, we have a very good chance of bringing the prize home! You are very welcome to spread the word, everyone – to your friends, on forums, where ever you want! Thanks in advance!

Ps. If you are lucky, you might still find one of DRLs water-walking-wolfes, though: There was no time to fix all the curiosities yet! ;)
